Bovenstaande vraag staat in A Journey, de pas verschenen memoires van Tony Blair. Die is nog niet vertaald, er staat dus eigenlijk "You got the Belgians running Europe?" en ze komt uit de mond van George W. Bush. Dat lazen wij overigens in de Telegraph.

Volgens Blair herkende Bush onze toenmalige eerste minister Guy Verhofstadt niet toen ze elkaar in 2001 ontmoetten op de G8-top in Genua.

"He didn't know or recognise Guy, whose advice he listened to with considerable astonishment," Schrijft Blair. "He then turned to me and whispered, ‘Who is this guy?' ‘He is the prime minister of Belgium,' I said. "Belgium? George said, clearly aghast at the possible full extent of his stupidity. ‘Belgium is not part of the G8'."

Blair legde Bush uit dat Verhofstadt op de top aanwezig was in zijn hoedanigheid van "president of Europe" - ons land was toen net als nu voorzitter van de Raad van de EU.
Waarop Bush repliceerde: "You got the Belgians running Europe?" en daar hoofdschuddend aan toevoegde "now aghast at our stupidity".
